A Life Changing Experience
Last week I had my job shadow, I job shadowed a special needs teacher for severely handicapped children at Barlett Middle school. My friend and I job shadowed at the same place but we job shadowed two different people. This made my experience significantly better because I had a partner in the assignment.
At first I didn’t even know where Barlett Middle School was but we found our way. When we got there I was amazed at the number of kids in that class. I was not expecting to see that many kids. Many of those kids are from Lindsay but since Lindsay does not offer Special needs classes then these children have to be transported every day from Lindsay to Porterville and back. Being around these kids, I understood something that many people do not know. I learned that these kids are more capable than what they look like and they can do and learn the work that normal kids do. I believe that the teachers that take on a class like the one I visited deserve to be recompensed for all their hard work. Although they are wonderful children it takes a very special, patient and dedicated person with a huge heart to pursue a career in this field. I believe that the state does not give enough help to students like these because they believe that they will not be as successful as normal kids. What they do not know is that they can be normal.
I have always said that people with these disabilities are a gift from above that are here to be loved and to teach us all how lucky we are. I had a great experience with these students many of them spoke to us and were very friendly and sweet. They seemed to be very interested in our lives and I was thrilled that they were. We were taught about how these children learn to have a good personal high gene, how they learn to count their money and use it, and how they learn touch math and the use of a calculator. Each student has a folder that says in what level they are and what they need to learn throughout the whole year. The teachers have to learn what each student needs to be taught and what incentives they must give them to be able to persuade and in a way, bribe each student. One student needs M&M’s to feel motivated to do her work, while another one is simply happy to have a verbal compensation, “Good Job, I like it!” is good enough for her. Over all my experience at Barlett Middle School was amazing I feel like I became more aware and more interested in a career in this field. I am seriously considering taking on a career like this one.
Unfortunately, I am a little behind in my senior project assignments I feel that we should all reserve the library after school and provide help and time for seniors to complete their work. It is hard sometimes for me to do work at home because I have so many other responsibilities and other work for other classes. I know that if we had a senior project time after school, at least once a week, other students and I would benefit and get caught up with everything.
